Service providers in telecom space, particularly small to medium sized are contracting out their operations to Managed Services providers, essentially vendors out there. There must be so many business justifications in doing so, but are the service providers accepting their failure to run the operations effectively. After all what do these managed services providers do? They don’t do any magic. Just operate the services in an efficient manner. So how a telecom service provider is still benefited even after paying them for managing? Isn’t that an additional cost? How is it that it becomes cheaper to them?

Does this mean that vendors while selling the solution, do not reveal ‘something’ to which only they are privy and when handed over the operations they are well equipped or the resources with the service provider are not properly trained. Somewhere, we have a gap that is creating market for managed services.

Look at the services from a different angle and how it is impacting the schema of telecom market. Vendors are becoming more powerful in the space. They first sell the solution and then charge their customers for their operations. Since they get the direct control of the operations, many other allied decisions are then in their hands. So they become the real powerful influencers in the decision making process. Of course, that is going to directly help them business wise.

Telecom service providers might be getting financial and operational benefits by letting a third party to manage their services, but look at the associated issues.

1. The dependence on the vendor is increasing. In fact, the service provider is itself inviting a vendor to take charge of everything. Diversification is the best ever thought strategy for minimizing the risk- risk of anything including dependence on any or a few business associates including the vendors.

2. The people running the operations are from the vendor (managed services provider). It can never happen that they will look into the interests of the company in the same manner as their own employees would; particularly when the two are in conflict. Their bondage with the company will always be loosely knit.

3. Whatever smart contracts we may sign off, the managed service provider can pack up and leave the company in an awkward position. For the managed service provider only has financial stake and to some extend reputation. On the other side, the telecom service provider has a large stake – customers, business, market, services, brand and what not.

4. Competitive advantage and differentiation is what everybody out there doing business it trying to do. By bringing a third party so close to business, we are losing all this. How come can they facilitate this when they can be having our competitor as the other customer? Agreed that we can have a contract clause that they won’t do direct business with them, but soon after finishing the contract with us they can go with very valuable information to our competitors to ‘manage’ them now.

5. Sometimes, the managed services can also become an impediment to the expansion plans of a service provider. For instance, the operator wants to go ahead with an expansion plan using a particular technology and the managed service provider is not well equipped to handle it. In such scenario, they will always oppose it or suggest some other way of achieving it that could not be beneficial to the service provider. To allure them, they could offer them heavy discounts and show them the ‘benefits’ like interoperability with the existing system, homogeneity with the network and all that, but it could not be the way in which the service provider would want to.

My arguments don’t propose that the telecom service provider by contracting its operations to a third party leaves to think. It is not that they do not take all their strategic decisions on their own. But the issue is they have got in an outsider who tells them that we are here for you. Gradually the dependence grows on this outsider and turns into a key influencer. They could be coming up with solutions based on ‘Win-Win’ principle, but they will always try to skew the principle more in their favour.

Today, the parliament of India is noisy again. There is no big deal about it. It happens every day it is supposed to work. But today, technology is making them shout. With the recent ongoing IPL controversies, outlook, a magazine of repute in India, has come out with a report claiming that the government super intelligence agency NTRO (National Techical Reserach Organisation) has been tapping the phones of some ministers and politicians whenever there is a controversy of national magnitude.

Whether it has happened or is just a false allegation, is yet to be ascertained. With both sides confident about it occurence and otherwise, it will take sometime to get things clear. But surely, in this instance, the investigating agency has been lucky to have been asked to track the telephone calls, which is very easy over POTS.

As the developments in communications advance, a person is networked through many ways and the accessibility to them has also improved. Though we had emails, chatting softwares, etc. earlier as well, but in recent years they are really at our finger tips. Mobile has made them highly approachable.

We can say, mobile Internet is happening; I mean the high speed mobile Internet and through your mobile you can use a VoIP client, a peer to peer client, social networking service or just an easy email. Tracking all these media, is not and would not be easy for any intelligence agency. Definitely not on this part of the earth. Merely being able to tap the fixed or mobile phone for voice calls won’t serve the purpose and with services being encrypted the tracking is going to be tougher. Even if something is achieved, it is going to take a lot of time, marring the investigation.

So what can be done? Should we stop all these services? Are we going to block them if we are not going to track them properly, particularly for national interests? We do mainly attribute security to national interests, but bunglings of high order like that in IPL is definitely a national interest. So, why should not the government be allowed to resort to all means in tracking the activities that could lead to something. We all need to think out seriously how with growing multiple ways of communication and their accessibility on the rise, we are able to preserve national interests. I know what is being made out in the Parliament is mere politics and that is surely not in the national interests. They are now focussing on the phone tapping as it is directly affecting politicians and are back-fronting the IPL issue as it could be a mud on the faces of some across the parties. So better play down it.

Recently, I have witnessed a significant increase in the advertising of Aircel. So thought, they must be now trying to build up as a national brand. Till now, it was focusing the southern part of India.

For the month of March, over 15 million subscribers have been added in the wireless segment. In absolute terms Reliance leads the operators with a little over 3 million additions to the subscribers. This number seems more predictable as Reliance is operating on a wider map in the country and its wireless services comprise of CDMA and the GSM.

But the real surprise comes from Aircel. The operator has been predominant in the southern states of India. Its presence on the country map was limited to this region and in terms of visibility, it was not of the stature of other competitors from the private sector. However, the numbers of March published by the regulator (TRAI) reveal a different story. Among the private cellular operators, Aircel has seen the maximum growth; it added 5.73% new subscribers compared to the previous month. Although, the operator has over 18 million of the total 391 million subscribers, which is around 5% (all wireless subscribers including WLL-F) of the market, the growth rate itself is an indication of its plans. No other private operator has been able to register a growth rate exceeding 4.4%. State owned BSNL leads the overall wireless operators with 5.89% increase. But this is attributed to WLL as well.

Talking in terms of pure cellular networks, Aircel has definitely emerged as a leader by way of proportionate increase in subscribers for the month.

Perhaps this has encouraged the operator to advertise heavily as it is expanding its network in other regions (circles).

Next Generation Networks have made broadcasters telecom companies and vice versa. A telecom operator is your television broadcaster and the company that provided content to your television sets is offering you telephone services. As an end user, it might rarely be affecting or could even go unnoticed. But, for the industry it matters a lot.

First of all the competition has increased manifold. Earlier the competition was among the telecom companies only or broadcasters only. But now the two industry segments are face to face. On top of it, the market dynamics have become very complex. The current communications and media market is a hybrid one that inherits characteristics from the parent industries. How well the synergy goes or the repulsion needs to be noticed?

In case of telcos, there is a competition within the industry as well between the fixed telephony operators and the cellular operators while in broadcasting there is no such thing. However, there are also different modes of offering the content like cable, satellite, etc. So these operators are also competing at a different level.

Both the segments have an incumbent that was essentially state owned in every country. However, the telecoms got used to other players much earlier than the television which is still being operated and owned by the government in many countries.

Without bias, I feel telcos have a better chance to win the market. Telcos have been living in competition for a long time now. There have been private ventures in the telecommunications market much earlier compared to the broadcasting towards which private investors looked at a later stage and the regulations also enabled that very late. In some countries, this is still not allowed.

Agreed, that in telecom also, the governments still have a major stake in the incumbent operator and many of the things are designed in such a way in the telecom market, that suit the incumbent only. But, at least there is an alternative provider.

Customerisation in the telecom is something that happened in the industry much earlier than in broadcasting. We had customer support, in whatever form, in the telecom, but in broadcasting it is still absent in many countries. Mobiles changed the telecom scenario in every country. The market commoditised, service approach changed, value added services concept got deeper and meaningful and lot many services emerged. The broadcasting market did not witness such a change. Though there are now alternatives how you want the content to be delivered in to your home television set; the market has not become competitive like the telecoms.

Technically as well, telecom operators have worked for a long on managing the network, keeping it up 24x7x365 and dealing with different technologies. They have also been in the environment where they are used to offering several services over one line.

With all these advantages and learning that telecom operators have earned during these many years, they are well positioned to better connect to the end users and that is very essential in this era of interactive technologies. My vote goes for telcos and definitely they will emerge as winners.

Nokia yesterday announced its Q1 results for 2009. All the financial parameters are witnessing a decrease year on year and sequentially. There is only one major reason to this and that is the recessionary market conditions. The consumer faith is all time low and every penny (whatever left) is being spent judiciously, if at all. Right now, most of the mobile markets were seeing upgrading of mobile handsets by the consumers and that was pushing the sales. But as the financial conditions began to get tougher, consumers preferred to keep their existing handsets.

There are many inferences one can draw after seeing the results of Nokia for this quarter. But, I could find one of them that will surely make some people happy. People who plan to buy or replace a mobile handset should wait for a while to get best out of their money.

In 2008, Q2 saw the maximum decline for ASP (Average Selling Price) of a mobile handset from Nokia. The decrease was 6.32%. For the year 2008, the A2SP (Average of Average Selling Price) for all the quarters was 3.81%. With the conditions prevalent towards the latter half of 2008, the decrease can be said as a modest one and such decrease in the ASP is something evident and explainable under normal circumstances as well.

But 2009, has not been a good year for mobile devices as well. For just one quarter, for which Nokia announced results, the decline in ASP is 8.5% valuing $85.7. Just a year ago, a Nokia handset would sell averaging $104.2. So in just four quarters the average selling price has fallen close to $20.

If the trend remains so, which is most likely to remain so, we could expect a further steeper decrease in the average selling price of mobile handsets, not only for Nokia but for other players as well. With things appearing to be remaining similar or worsening in Q2 right up to Q4, we could expect a similar rate decrease in the ASP per quarter. Considering the decrease of 8.5% in ASP per quarter, we should see the selling price of a Nokia handset averaging around $65.8, which would be decrease of one-third in the price in two years time. Surely the mobile handset manufacturers will have tough time ahead. Probably they need to rethink about the product lines they must focus on at present. It is expected there will be reduction in the rate of replacement of handsets, the key to success lies with the new markets of Asia where the basic sub $100 handset is the handset of masses. For the time being, handset manufacturers must focus on this segment till waters are calm.

VoIP is still restricted in many countries by regulations. Apart from the birth it gives to the grey market, eats up revenue and traffic of the PSTN operators, blah blah; the restrictions not allowing VoIP has fragmented the industry considerably.

The large serious players are unlikely to do anything that is illegal. So we might not see them entering in to a market that prohibits VoIP. This makes a market for the small, often a group of friends or colleagues joining to form a VoIP company. SIP is an open source platform and getting a softphone is not difficult for these people. Then you have so many wholesalers from where one can add minutes.

There are thousands of such small VoIP providers who mainly exist only because of prohibited markets. They easily sneak in to these markets and through resellers sell their cards and softphones to the customers. Regulators also, rarely come to know about these unheard of VoIP ‘companies’ and do not block them.

Having a fair number of players in the market is good for any market as it creates tough competition benefiting customers. But in case of VoIP, the market is highly fragmented and because of these small players the large ones (serious ones) are suffering. This is creating problems for the mainstream players as well as the industry. The main problem to which these small operators are contributing is about the perception of the technology. Since, they are small, they look for cheap things. Cheap equipments, cheap minutes and at the same time give no attention to QoS. So the users are never able to see the acceptable level of quality coming through VoIP and that hinders them trying the service again even from a serious player.

Even if the incumbents have problems in allowing VoIP in their respective countries, they could resort to restrictive market practices rather than not allowing the service altogether (through the respective regulators). The best policy in the interests of the incumbent was that the Incumbent should only be allowed to offer VoIP. That way it would not lose on the revenues that otherwise go to these small VoIP operators and when people have the alternative, they would not look at the illegal things. Hope these regulators finally wake up and allow VoIP even in limited manner.

Skype is one of the products that has contributed in its field and become an integral part of the industry. It is a global telecom operator in essence with most of its followers claiming to have become global players.

The application is used by over 400 million registered users. The most recent update (Version 4) has made some interesting makeover apparently projecting video calling. Although, there are no authentic figures about how many of these do actually use paid services of Skype, but it is evident that a nominal percentage actually pays for any of Skype’s services.

Not sure, how long the company will sustain this model and if it makes all the services paid; will that be acceptable as there are many other clients offering free PC to PC service. To boost up the revenues, Skype must try out with the ad based model. Skype has two potential streams for revenue through advertisements. One could be the banner and display advertisements that could be used in the windows of the client. Another slot that Skype could try with advertisements is the time from initiating a call till the connection is established (the ringing period). I have observed it takes a minimum of 30 seconds to establish a call and this time can be used for voice ads by Skype. Though the advertising must be for free services only i.e. PC to PC calling.

With the speculations going around that Skype founders are repurchasing it, hope they boost the revenues with the introduction of advertising. Till then enjoy free Skyping.

Mobile phones and an individual have become inseparable. Leaving apart its dark sides, it is proving beneficial in several ways. For business people, it means optimization of time and for the general masses it means timely communication in case of emergencies.

India is facing many issues that make the lives of the people insecure. People across ages, religion, race and so on. We see extortions, kidnappings, rapes, eve teasing and other similar heinous crimes happening everyday across the country. Unfortunately, teenagers and kids are the ones targeted most of the times. It is not only that grown-ups can face some emergencies. Kids and teenagers are more prone to such risks.

In a routine day, youngsters are exposed to high risk timings like commuting to school and back, attending extra tuition classes, attending activity and sports clubs, hang out with friends, etc. At these occasions parents are not usually with their wards and the criminals often take advantage of such instances and commit crimes.

Legally anybody under 18 years of age cannot enter into a contract in India; hence cannot subscribe to mobile services. So what most of the parents do (who want to be extra cautious); they subscribe to a prepaid mobile service in their name for kids to use. This way they are always in touch with them and can be around them in shortest possible time when needed.

It is not necessary to say that this is not good. With kids exposed to so many threats in India, it is important that we have a system that keeps kids connected with their parents and the emergency service providers like police, so that they are able to contact them when required. It will not only help in getting rid of the habit of some parents who get a connection in their name to be used by the kids but will also be beneficial for the law abiding parents whose kids are equally important to them but do not want to go against law.

Then there are several mobile value added services like ringtone downloads, wallpaper downloads, etc. that mainly attracts kids and if remains unchecked can consume a lot of their pocket monies which is effectively borne by parents. If the mobile services are offered under parental control as is offered by several operators, like AT&T in US, parents can easily restrict the services and budget allocations per type of service.

To initiate the process we need to set in place regulations providing for such services where the subscription for kids will remain linked with their parent’s connection. Legally a parent will be the customer. Then there has to be a bouquet of services that could be offered for kids. Essentially these could be calling restricted numbers to be managed by parents, access to emergency numbers and a few value added services as may be thought by parents. So the TRAI must initiate process of consulting service providers and other stake holders about deciding the framework of such a service.

For service providers this will mean additional revenues, early capturing of customers as these kids would grow in the full fledged customers and a service that will be a service to the citizens of the nation. The early entrant into this space can also get some extra share of the pie by seeing some switching happening of the parent’s connections. On top of it there could be some new value added services like cartoons, comics and short stories through which service providers can stream in additional revenues.

One basic benefit that attracts any person towards IP is cost saving. Where you were spending around a dollar on call per minute, IP alternative could either be offering that for free or around a few cents. Even at this level companies are enjoying handsome margin levels.

IP has really enabled certain technologies that could mean a lot in the times of recession for enterprises as well as the individuals. The basic one could be a voice call. From organizations to individuals, everybody will save 70 – 80% on calls. Then there is convergence. So the operating expenses also go down as organizations are maintaining a single network for all its communication needs – data, voice, video and wireless.

Video conferencing and Webinars could be alternatives for corporate meets, board meetings and training programs. Thus saving a lot on the travel expenses associated. In the SME segment, who cannot afford or find it worth to own things and deploy communication infrastructure, could use the VoIP clients like Skype for communicating over the public Internet. They could save on the inter locations communications cost.

In the enterprise segment, companies could go for hosted solutions, making their fixed costs as variable so paying for only that they use.

Besides, cost cutting and controlling is a common phenomenon during the slowdown and billing solutions for IP based systems are so efficient that they can be easily monitored, managed and controlled. By this the managers would be able to limit the communications cost within their budgets.

All this would mean more and more usage of IP resulting in the increase in demand for IP communications. At the same time, companies would not prefer to invest in the infrastructure even if the operational costs would go down. So the hosted offers will have an edge. Or else the operators and vendors will have to come together and bundle the service with cyclic payment plans ranging from monthly to maximum possible and feasible plan. The option could be intensive usage of software – softclients on the CPE side where the customers (enterprises) would buy the multiuser licenses for the software rather than buying the equipments and devices.

Definitely, companies would like to cut communication costs but not the communication. So even those who were reluctant about IP will think of it now and could perhaps be trying it. This will only result in more deployments. For the vendors and service providers, the challenge would be designing plans that are based on variable costing as companies would like to see their communications cost in line with the business volumes.

The present recessionary conditions could be the turning point for IP technology. We could potentially see enterprises looking at alternatives that offer communications coming with cheaper costs and there is nothing better and cheaper than IP.

Historically data vendors, like Cisco, have got an entry in telecom space mainly due to IP Telephony. IP Telephony did wonders and bad things concurrently for vendors in the communications space – be it a data vendor, voice vendor, video vendor, wireless vendor or wireline vendor. IP brought them all on the same table.

By now everybody agrees that mobility is the future in communications. So all the futuristic solutions will have mobility component. Somehow, vendors are trying to have more of speed to have rich content applications over the wireless networks. For an end-user it will be immaterial how it gets it. They should be able to use these applications over their wireless devices.

Right now we are at a cross road. Whether to go with LTE or WiMAX? I say both will co-exist. The selection of the option will be determined by who is selecting. If it is a cellular operator, definitely they will go for LTE or at least advocate for it. On the other hand, if it is a data operator like as ISP, it will prefer WiMAX. After all, both want a wireless alternative that kind of extends their present learning curves.

Clearwire, the largest WiFi access point network owner in the world, recently set up a WiMAX innovation network at Silicon Valley to help developers build applications in real time over the network. There are three major communications companies that have supported the network – Cisco, Google and Intel. Of these Intel has been since banking upon WiMAX and developed a chip for it. Google is perhaps looking at WiMAX to develop its own broadband network to bypass the intermediaries. Equally this is attracting Cisco. Cisco has not a presence a mobile market. It has little or no solutions for GSM or other mobile networks. But it also wants to have its presence in the mobile market at wide area level. At homes, it already dominates the WiFi market with gateways and routers and modems. To expand this presence in a broader perspective, WiMAX suits it very well. In fact some of the experts in the industry believe WiFi-WiMAX convergence would be the final answer – with WiFi taking care under the roof and WiMAX being the channel outside. In that scenario, Cisco will be able to deliver end to end and supporting this initiative from Clearwire is definitely a step in this direction.

It will be interesting to see, whether WiMAX dominates or the LTE. I will not say who will win. Both will coexist. But we need to check whether mobility will have the lead or enabling data. For sure, we will see other traditionally data vendors polarising towards the WiMAX and it should be like that. Makes sense!
