On the content side, apart from Japanese BS 11, which has been offering 3D broadcast since 2008, for couple of times a day; some other major broadcasters have announced their 3D plans and 2010, shall see more of the content available in three dimension. Of the majors include, Sky Sports 3D, Sky Movies 3D, MSG 3D, ESPN 3D, Sky 3D channel, etc.

Some of the channels started early 2010 and others are slated to be in the air by the end of this year. South Korean broadcaster, Korea Digital Satellite Broadcasting launched first in world 3D channel, SKY 3D. The channel has content of all genre like sports, documentaries, etc.

Also many major content providers and vendors like IMAX, Sony and Discovery have already announced their plans to launch a 24 hour channel by this year end. DirecTV and Panasonic also plan to launch 2 channels and 1 VOD channel with 3D content by end of 1H 2010.

All the above developments mean the kick start of 3D era for television. This will be a remarkable change in our perception about television. High Definition has already brought to us the ‘crystal clear’ content and 3D will definitely add a great value.

For the industry, it means a lot of opportunity all along the supply chain. But, at the begining, content will definitely be a bottleneck. The industry will need to adopt two directional strategy – creating new 3D content and converting the present 2D into 3D. So players like Adobe and Pinnacle have a great role to play in this segment.

First of all the competition has increased manifold. Earlier the competition was among the telecom companies only or broadcasters only. But now the two industry segments are face to face. On top of it, the market dynamics have become very complex. The current communications and media market is a hybrid one that inherits characteristics from the parent industries. How well the synergy goes or the repulsion needs to be noticed?

In case of telcos, there is a competition within the industry as well between the fixed telephony operators and the cellular operators while in broadcasting there is no such thing. However, there are also different modes of offering the content like cable, satellite, etc. So these operators are also competing at a different level.

Both the segments have an incumbent that was essentially state owned in every country. However, the telecoms got used to other players much earlier than the television which is still being operated and owned by the government in many countries.

Without bias, I feel telcos have a better chance to win the market. Telcos have been living in competition for a long time now. There have been private ventures in the telecommunications market much earlier compared to the broadcasting towards which private investors looked at a later stage and the regulations also enabled that very late. In some countries, this is still not allowed.

Agreed, that in telecom also, the governments still have a major stake in the incumbent operator and many of the things are designed in such a way in the telecom market, that suit the incumbent only. But, at least there is an alternative provider.

Customerisation in the telecom is something that happened in the industry much earlier than in broadcasting. We had customer support, in whatever form, in the telecom, but in broadcasting it is still absent in many countries. Mobiles changed the telecom scenario in every country. The market commoditised, service approach changed, value added services concept got deeper and meaningful and lot many services emerged. The broadcasting market did not witness such a change. Though there are now alternatives how you want the content to be delivered in to your home television set; the market has not become competitive like the telecoms.

Technically as well, telecom operators have worked for a long on managing the network, keeping it up 24x7x365 and dealing with different technologies. They have also been in the environment where they are used to offering several services over one line.

With all these advantages and learning that telecom operators have earned during these many years, they are well positioned to better connect to the end users and that is very essential in this era of interactive technologies. My vote goes for telcos and definitely they will emerge as winners.

The large serious players are unlikely to do anything that is illegal. So we might not see them entering in to a market that prohibits VoIP. This makes a market for the small, often a group of friends or colleagues joining to form a VoIP company. SIP is an open source platform and getting a softphone is not difficult for these people. Then you have so many wholesalers from where one can add minutes.

There are thousands of such small VoIP providers who mainly exist only because of prohibited markets. They easily sneak in to these markets and through resellers sell their cards and softphones to the customers. Regulators also, rarely come to know about these unheard of VoIP ‘companies’ and do not block them.

Having a fair number of players in the market is good for any market as it creates tough competition benefiting customers. But in case of VoIP, the market is highly fragmented and because of these small players the large ones (serious ones) are suffering. This is creating problems for the mainstream players as well as the industry. The main problem to which these small operators are contributing is about the perception of the technology. Since, they are small, they look for cheap things. Cheap equipments, cheap minutes and at the same time give no attention to QoS. So the users are never able to see the acceptable level of quality coming through VoIP and that hinders them trying the service again even from a serious player.

Even if the incumbents have problems in allowing VoIP in their respective countries, they could resort to restrictive market practices rather than not allowing the service altogether (through the respective regulators). The best policy in the interests of the incumbent was that the Incumbent should only be allowed to offer VoIP. That way it would not lose on the revenues that otherwise go to these small VoIP operators and when people have the alternative, they would not look at the illegal things. Hope these regulators finally wake up and allow VoIP even in limited manner.

Although, there are no authentic figures about how many of these do actually use paid services of Skype, but it is evident that a nominal percentage actually pays for any of Skype’s services.

Not sure, how long the company will sustain this model and if it makes all the services paid; will that be acceptable as there are many other clients offering free PC to PC service. To boost up the revenues, Skype must try out with the ad based model. Skype has two potential streams for revenue through advertisements. One could be the banner and display advertisements that could be used in the windows of the client. Another slot that Skype could try with advertisements is the time from initiating a call till the connection is established (the ringing period). I have observed it takes a minimum of 30 seconds to establish a call and this time can be used for voice ads by Skype. Though the advertising must be for free services only i.e. PC to PC calling.

IP has really enabled certain technologies that could mean a lot in the times of recession for enterprises as well as the individuals. The basic one could be a voice call. From organizations to individuals, everybody will save 70 – 80% on calls. Then there is convergence. So the operating expenses also go down as organizations are maintaining a single network for all its communication needs – data, voice, video and wireless.

Video conferencing and Webinars could be alternatives for corporate meets, board meetings and training programs. Thus saving a lot on the travel expenses associated. Or else the operators and vendors will have to come together and bundle the service with cyclic payment plans ranging from monthly to maximum possible and feasible plan. The option could be intensive usage of software – softclients on the CPE side where the customers (enterprises) would buy the multiuser licenses for the software rather than buying the equipments and devices.

Definitely, companies would like to cut communication costs but not the communication. So even those who were reluctant about IP will think of it now and could perhaps be trying it. This will only result in more deployments. For the vendors and service providers, the challenge would be designing plans that are based on variable costing as companies would like to see their communications cost in line with the business volumes.

The present recessionary conditions could be the turning point for IP technology. We could potentially see enterprises looking at alternatives that offer communications coming with cheaper costs and there is nothing better and cheaper than IP.

By now everybody agrees that mobility is the future in communications. So all the futuristic solutions will have mobility component. Somehow, vendors are trying to have more of speed to have rich content applications over the wireless networks. For an end-user it will be immaterial how it gets it. They should be able to use these applications over their wireless devices.

Right now we are at a cross road. Whether to go with LTE or WiMAX? I say both will co-exist. The selection of the option will be determined by who is selecting. If it is a cellular operator, definitely they will go for LTE or at least advocate for it. On the other hand, if it is a data operator like as ISP, it will prefer WiMAX. After all, both want a wireless alternative that kind of extends their present learning curves.

Clearwire, the largest WiFi access point network owner in the world, recently set up a WiMAX innovation network at Silicon Valley to help developers build applications in real time over the network. There are three major communications companies that have supported the network – Cisco, Google and Intel. Of these Intel has been since banking upon WiMAX and developed a chip for it. Google is perhaps looking at WiMAX to develop its own broadband network to bypass the intermediaries. Equally this is attracting Cisco. Cisco has not a presence a mobile market. It has little or no solutions for GSM or other mobile networks. But it also wants to have its presence in the mobile market at wide area level. At homes, it already dominates the WiFi market with gateways and routers and modems. To expand this presence in a broader perspective, WiMAX suits it very well. In fact some of the experts in the industry believe WiFi-WiMAX convergence would be the final answer – with WiFi taking care under the roof and WiMAX being the channel outside. In that scenario, Cisco will be able to deliver end to end and supporting this initiative from Clearwire is definitely a step in this direction.

It will be interesting to see, whether WiMAX dominates or the LTE. I will not say who will win. Both will coexist. But we need to check whether mobility will have the lead or enabling data. For sure, we will see other traditionally data vendors polarising towards the WiMAX and it should be like that. Makes sense!

As per the impressive results for the quarterly (December 2008 – February 2009), the company earned a revenue of $3.46 billion and shipped 7.8 million handsets. Of these 7.3 million handsets were activated during the period. The average selling price for a handset was $370 and revenue from handset sale constituted 83% of the quarterly revenue.

Other segments fetching revenue for the quarter were service ($415 million), software ($59 million) and other revenues ($106 million) that constitutes repairing and servicing of non-warranty products.

The growth of blackberry is across the globe. It is not specified to a particular region or country. This quarter the non North America subscriber base reached one third of the total and countries across Europe, Asia and Middle East showed growth in sales. A lot of operators announced availability of Blackberry services/handsets during the quarter and some of the carriers launched aggressive sale plans. The company in its latest release attributed these offers for its unexpected growth in the quarter.

Blackberry is a strategically positioned handset. It has made its presence in the enterprise domain. Today, half of its customers are in enterprise segment and the remaining are from non-enterprise domain, most of whom must still be in the enterprises. So to push or launch a service in the enterprise domain, Blackberry is definitely the best handheld wireless device. The service will see lot of users and it will be a value addition for Blackberry.

Fixed Mobile Convergence, which essentially must have an IP leg (not the Internet connectivity through GPRS, 3G or data calls, etc.) is primarily attracting the enterprises. Even some studies done on the subject show that more than 70% of the subscribers are from enterprises. In an enterprise environment a WiFi cloud can be used to beam IP over these devices when the user within premises and while on the road the handset uses cellular networks like the GSM or CDMA. Unfortunately, FMC has not taken up in the way it was presumed earlier. There are many reasons, primary to me is that cellular operators are not pursuing this technology as it gives traditionally data service providers an access in to talk business. FMC somehow, brings data operators in direct competition with the cellular operators. Cellular operators on the other hand prefer to push LTE as it is an extension to their networks and technologies for which they need not to acquire capabilities from a different domain.

Whatever the case, if Fixed Mobile Convergence providers have to really make it an impressive service with handsome figures of users and revenues, it must seriously look at Blackberry devices that have their established place within the enterprise domain. Addition of the capability also gels well with the philosophy of Blackberry and it will definitely be a value addition for the existing users. RIM could also make some more money by offering Instant Messaging and VoIP client in their handsets and enable VoIP calls from these devices.

Although, presently even if you subscribe to 3G data services or have a high-end mobile that has WiFi connectivity, one can probably enjoy all the features that Blackberry is offering. The underlying technology may be different but that hardly matter for the end users. Blackberry has undoubtedly made a market of its own which seems to be unshakable in recent times to come. But it will not be an easy way for IPTV to grow in India. India has close to 130 million homes with a television and majority of them are fed by cable, around 55%. Rest is with conditional access, Direct to home and the terrestrial feeds. So it is not that IPTV can become a source or alternative of reaching to untapped market. The remaining households that do not have a television set cannot be the target market. They are in the deep regions of India that are not on the Internet map and might not even figure for decades to come; they are really very remote and do not have the affordability to own a television. They even lack basic facilities like the electricity. So they are used to the traditional ways of entertainment.

Effectively, the target market for IPTV could be the near 4 million broadband customers. Broadband subscribers primarily reside in urban India comprising of metropolitans and large cities. Their television sets are fed by cable, conditional access and DTH. Of these DTH has been recently introduced and there are seven providers including the national broadcaster Doordarshan which is offering the free DTH services (there is no monthly fee charged, but the service is basic). So the large cities where majority of the broadband customers are, use conditional access and DTH replacing the existing cable TV. Both conditional access system (introduced in four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai only) and the DTH have been operational for the past 2-3 years and the consumers have invested in the CPE. It is very rare that they will be inclined to switch to IPTV, effectively for nothing.

On top of it is the speed of broadband. ISPs in India offer broadband services starting from 256 KPBS that could go up to 2 MPBS. Most of the times, the speed is under 2 MPBS at around 1.3 – 1.5 MPBS over which every IPTV platform will not function optimally. Generally IPTV solutions are designed to operate with a minimum of 2 MPBS of speed. There are also issues about the uptime of Internet services. There are still locations in India where broadband services see regular failures.

The key to the success of any IPTV content in India is with the content. Interactivity of the package will not be a thing that will attract subscribers in large numbers. Generally, IPTV providers position their offers as something having a value addition by way of content, interactivity, applications and so on. But in India, these things seem to be very difficult and when consumers have already had the taste through CAS and DTH applications. Consumers are using EPG and other interactivity features that these platforms are offering. Games, recipe books, weather info and stocks info is also not going to attract the Indian consumer. Entertainment in India means movies, soaps and music, all of which is available over the present TV systems. The IPTV providers cannot fool the consumers in this area, where the India consumer is very educated and informed. TRAI has replied back to DOT maintaining its initial stand on these issues; which any and every regulator would do. The TRAI has recommended realistically for issues arising out of Internet Telephony that will give a room for growth for the technology and at the same time lead to a sizeable market of Internet Telephony in India. The philosophy of the recommendations has been to aim at two things – designing a framework for the technology and giving the technology enablers a free hand which is very crucial particularly in the initial stages of the technology to result in a mature market. Only by showing some flexibility more and more players will dive into the market which is always beneficial for the end users.

Among the recommendations, the regulatory authority has recommended that the decision of facilitating emergency number calls over the Internet phones should be left to the service providers. It should not be made mandatory.

This debate over emergency number calling over VoIP networks has been there globally. Most of the regulators concluded that this decision be left over with the service providers as VoIP is primarily an alternative telephone line or a second telephone connection with the users. It is essential that users must be able to call in case of emergency and for that they could use their primary PSTN line.

India is likely to follow the universal trend of Internet Telephony being an alternative route and it will be a secondary line with the users. If not a fixed line, the users will surely be having a mobile phone over which they could make emergency calls.

Another interesting phenomenon is about the level of service offered over emergency numbers and then the usage of emergency numbers. The emergency number service in India only allows users to call for police, fire services and the ambulance services depending on the requirement. No advanced services are offered such as geographic identification of the caller to facilitate prompt services. A caller has to make a number of calls before pin pointing the right person for help. It is not an automatic system like in most of the mature telecom markets. Most of the times making a call is of no use and the person has to use other methods even in the case of emergencies for the callous attitude of the authorities who are approached for the help.

India is a security sensitive country and it is very important to identify the location of the caller for various reasons. In other countries the advanced emergency number call systems help authorities like police and secret services to find out the location of the caller. But in India, location is only ascertained after intervention of the service providers. One very useful tool for this has been CLIP that lets the other party know about the number of the caller. Once the E.164 numbering is followed for Internet Telephony in India (as recommended by TRAI), having CLIP for Internet Telephones will not be an issue and the service providers will have to capability of tracking the callers.

With this scenario, it seems that TRAI has aptly recommended that enabling emergency number calling be the discretion of the service provider. There is no reason why DOT should make it an issue for Internet Telephony to start in India. Once the Internet Telephony is operated in a controlled manner through these service providers, it will be as easy for the authorities to track the calls and callers in case of any need as is with the regular PSTN and mobile telephony. Users will be able to make emergency calls when needed through their primary lines and the callers can be traced through CLIP and other such facilities with the intervention of the service providers.

Over the past few years, TRAI has been among very few regulators who are encouraging emerging technologies than finding out impediments in making them a reality. Be it conditional access, IPTV, DTH, WiFi or the broadband services, TRAI has always tried to develop an atmosphere which would incubate the technology and service leading to the maturity of the telecom market in the country.
